A retrospective analysis was carried out on the results of gastric pull-up operation and free jejunal graft for reconstruction of pharynx and cervical esophagus at Korea Cancer Center Hospital from October 1987 through July 1991. Gastric pull-up
operation was performed in 6 cases of which primary site was 5 hypophryngeal cancer and 1 recurrent laryngeal cancer. Success rate of anastomosis was 83.7%, and overall mortality rate was 16.7%. Free jejunal graft was performed in 7 cases of
which
primary site was 6 hypopharyngeal cancer and 1 recurrent papillary adenocarcinoma of thyroid. Overall mortality rate was 14.3% and success rate of graft was 100% except expired one case due to esophageal varix bleeding. Postoperative
complications
of
gastric pull-up operation were fistula, pneumothorax, atelectasis, pleural effusion, abdominal bleeding, and paralytic ileus, etc. And the complications of free jejunal graft were stenosis of anastomosis site and pneumonia.
